Episode 014: Cryptomedicine? CitizenHealth Looking to Transform the US Health Care Industry with Brennen Hodge, CEO

One of the biggest obstacles faced by patients and doctors in health care is the exchange of payment for services as this is now accomplished through intermediaries like insurance companies, Medicare, etc. Because of this, patients have less control of what their care looks like and doctors face a lot of time wasted trying to please the payor and not the patient. What would happen if we used a cryptocurrency with verifiable records on a blockchain with miniscule transaction fees? Or if you could earn credits as a patient by performing healthy acts (taking the stairs, sleeping well, etc.)?

In this interesting discussion, Eric and Brennen discuss his role at a new startup called CitizenHealth which looks to create an entirely new market for the delivery of health care. Through an online, blockchain, and cryptocurrency system they are seeking to allow for the purchase of health care products, surgeries, medications, and devices paid for by patients and maybe their employers.

The engine for growth of this startup is leveraging the explosion of direct primary care physicians who are looking for a simpler way for patients to participate in DPC and ancillary services. The initial project will start in Mississippi and Texas and then grow organically from there as the proof of concept plays out. The company, CitizenHealth, is still seeking capitalization but has begun to launch a number of its initiatives.

Brennen Hodge, CEO of CitizenHealth decided to tackle the small task of transforming the entire US health care industry.
